Adverse events and protocol noncompliance are an expected part of any animal care and use program and often require reporting to regulatory bodies such as NIH, OLAW, USDA, and AAALAC International. While some cases are simple, others involve complex dynamics, multiple stakeholders, and strained relationships that make investigations feel like navigating a minefield. This session, designed for experienced program personnel, will use interactive scenarios to explore common pitfalls and share strategies for turning challenging situations into constructive, educational experiences, helping participants build best practices for handling sensitive investigations at their institutions.

Learning Objectives:

  • Recognize key sensitivities and challenges encountered by the noncompliance team and IACUC during adverse event investigations
  • Describe effective techniques for de-escalating conflict and managing difficult interactions in the context of noncompliance reviews
  • Identify strategies for transforming adverse events and noncompliance investigations into constructive learning opportunities that foster a culture of compliance and collaboration within the animal care and use program
