Alastair Thomson is founder of AI Strategy LLC, a Virginia based consultancy focused on the application of AI to biomedicine and healthcare. He is the former Chief Data Officer for the Advanced Research Project Agency for Health (ARPA-H) and former Chief Information Officer for the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute at NIH. He has deep experience in biomedical and healthcare data and while at ARPA-H, led efforts to integrate Artificial Intelligence into the agency, whether it was in data extraction and analysis in the Palantir Foundry platform, or the creation of GRACE, an agentic AI platform with deeply sourced biomedical data and literature to work along side ARPA-H Program Managers as an AI scientist assistant. While at NHLBI he conceived and the led the development of the NHLBI BioData Catalyst™ cloud based multi-omics platform. He has had a diverse career that including co-founding one of the Southern Hemisphere’s leading computer animation companies, working in academia, industries including telecommunications, insurance, logistics, broadcast television production and in government. He has particular interests in enabling a “learning healthcare system” through the establishment of a Real World Data (RWD) Public Utility that can enable the power of AI to come to bear on the health needs of Americans and a strong interest in questions of ethics, consent and safety in the application of AI in healthcare. He is a graduate of the University of Otago in Dunedin, New Zealand and holds degrees in psychology and computer science.
