Dr. Bryan received his Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from Emory University in 1991, and his Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine, Certificate in International Veterinary Medicine, and Master of Science (Veterinary Pathology) each from the University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine (UGA CVM) in 2007 and 2009. Following veterinary school, Dr. Bryan completed a post-doctoral program in wildlife veterinary medicine at the Southeastern Cooperative Wildlife Disease Study (SCWDS) where he focused on the surveillance, diagnosis, response, management, and research of wildlife disease. In 2009, Dr. Bryan left SCWDS to become a Wildlife Veterinary Medical Officer with the U.S. National Park Service (NPS). During his tenure with the NPS; from 2009 – 2014, Dr. Bryan served as the inaugural architect and author of the NPS Animal Welfare Policy, and as the first NPS IACUC Chair & Attending Veterinarian. In 2015, Dr. Bryan returned to SCWDS to serve as a Wildlife Public Service Assistant focusing on wildlife disease, invasive species, and as the wildife specialist on the UGA IACUC. Dr. Bryan left SCWDS in 2018 to establish Zachery Consulting, LLC; a freelance wildlife consulting service focused on wildlife animal welfare law & policy, wildlife disease, and research. Dr. Bryan currently serves as Co-Chair of the American Society of Mammalogists (ASM) ACUC and as the ASM Delegate to the Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care International (AAALAC, Int.). He also serves as an Ad-Hoc Consultant with AAALAC, Int. Dr. Bryan has helped numerous state, federal, and private sector agencies/entities establish wildlife animal welfare programs.
