The 3Rs—Replacement, Reduction, and Refinement—are essential principles for the ethical and humane use of animals in research, and regulatory agencies require their integration into all animal studies and IACUC protocols. This session will focus on the "Refinement" component, highlighting innovative approaches to enhance experimental design, methodology, and alternative searches. By applying these strategies, researchers and IACUCs can promote better animal welfare, meet compliance requirements, and achieve more consistent, reproducible results across laboratories.

Learning Objectives:

  • Apply best practices for conducting literature and resource searches to identify procedures that minimize pain and distress in laboratory animals
  • Recognize the impact of environmental and procedural stressors on laboratory animals and their potential to compromise data quality
  • Enhance refinement in animal protocols while reducing regulatory burden by leveraging shared databases to exchange and improve research procedures across institutions
