IRBs rely on principles, regulations, and judgment to navigate ethical dilemmas, but these frameworks can overlook participants’ lived experiences—especially those outside societal norms. Emerging digital health tools and restrictions on “vulnerable” participants may raise privacy and autonomy concerns IRBs don’t always anticipate. This panel will explore shifting from a paternalistic model to one that respects participants as moral agents with valuable ethical insights. Through interactive discussions, attendees will learn how incorporating participant perspectives can strengthen ethical oversight, protections, and trust in research.
