This session introduces compassion fatigue in animal care and research settings and explores how building compassion resilience can protect staff well-being and enhance animal welfare. Attendees will engage in discussions to identify signs of fatigue, examine its effects on individuals and programs, and collaborate on practical strategies to foster resilience. Participants will explore how these concepts apply to IACUC members, support staff, and researchers, and how strengthening resilience can improve oversight functions like training and post-approval monitoring.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand the concepts of compassion fatigue and compassion resilience, including their relevance to all roles within the animal care and use program
  • Recognize the signs and impacts of compassion fatigue on personnel and animal welfare, and explore strategies to build resilience while supporting ethical and regulatory research practices
  • Identify practical approaches to implementing compassion resilience strategies and develop metrics to evaluate their effectiveness across key IACUC functions
