University students are a frequently studied population at many academic institutions, often due to their accessibility. However, many IRBs classify students as a vulnerable population because of potential coercion and undue influence. This session will explore ethical strategies for recruiting student participants, including best practices for IRB review of student subject pools, guidance on research involving student populations, and special considerations for exempt research.

Learning Objectives:

  • Explore the protective role of IRBs/HRPPs regarding student participants and how institutions develop policies for their inclusion in research
  • Identify best practices from other institutions for involving students as research participants that can be adapted to your own institution
  • Examine recruitment strategies and ethical considerations to minimize undue influence and coercion, particularly when students are recruited by professors or authority figures
